I think that most of you have seen thumbs.db in a folder at least once in a while. Did you ever try to check what actually it is? If not then you are at right spot because after reading this post you will know this good old file in a better way.

Actually it is a system file generated by XP when you view the contents of a folder in thumbnail view. It contains a copy of each of the tiny preview images generated for image files in that folder so that they load up quickly. So it acts as a cache for those image files.

If you don’t want then you can stop caching of thumbnails by-

  • Click Tools in your explorer window.
  • Now select Folder Options.
  • Now select View.
  • Check  the Do not cache thumbnails check box.

Now this file won’t tease you anymore.
